andModern times are all the more stressful to each one of us… doesn’t matter your age, gender, personality style, occupation or even your patience levels. In fact, stress exactly does that… tests your nerves!

It is not because we don’t have time that we get stressed, it is because we are stressed that we don’t find the time to do the things we need to, we want to!

So, when you are down with stress, trust yourself to give you the boost and uplift soon enough. If you wait long or think it will pass, you may run the risk of entering into a depressive state.

Here are five simple and instant self-motivators below:

1. Sing your favourite songs, or at least hum them. If your voice is not good enough, it is alright. Don’t judge your singing abilities. You are not singing to win any competition. You are singing to cheer up yourself.

2. You can do better by listening to your favourite songs. Store some good songs in your mobile and while you play them, make sure to sing along. Keep a check on your environment and see that you are not disturbing others in the process.

3. Look at funny side of yourself. It doesn’t imply that you need to act funny or keep laughing at yourself neither you should be alarmed if your sense of humour is low. All you need to do is smile at your silly follies and be at ease with yourself.

4. Observe a green tree, plant or a leaf. It could be a potted plant at the corner of your office or one outside the window or your computer wallpaper. Wherever it is, spot a green and lighten your mood. Green is a healing colour, so it has its psychological effects.

5. Make a ‘to do’ list for the evening/day/week/month. And keep a check on what you have achieved so far in the  day/week/month. This will help you to know where you stand now and put you back on the track to where you should be. Most of all, it puts you in the action mode.

If these are not applicable to you, think again… try it again. Still, if it’s not working, I am sure you will find your own instant motivators. Motivation is always available. Open yourself to it. Keep away the stressors. Positive thoughts lead to positive actions which in turn leads to positive outcomes.

Manimals

Evolution may have taken its own course and made a man out of a chimpanzee…

And looking at the present situation, is it that man is now evolving into a machine (think – robots, clones, technological/digital presence of humans)? However, it doesn’t matter how far technology can go, how quick communications reach, how brilliant are the ideas that generate in the fascinating human mind… will it erase out our origin? Will it remove the basic instincts? Can the fundamental roots be eliminated?

Based on Abraham Maslow’s hierarchical needs theory which again is subject to criticisms, is it that humans are superior because they don’t just have basic needs like the animals? The ‘Man’ is much more curious, imaginative, inventive, adaptive, communicative, logical, creative… that he has the world at his feet. Courtesy to the creation of his brains and his right to question and his ability to get answers… Wow!

Sadly, the ‘Man’ is also greedier, selfish, over-powering, dominant, reckless, manipulative, unpredictable… that he has filled the world with sins, crimes, poverty, fear, agony, depression that negativity could be a synonym for mankind. Being wild in anger and being spiteful is not what animals are… Animals are born wild… We are supposed to be civilized… Animals get along with the nature and obey nature’s rules… We are supposed to protect nature but we create our own rules and disobey them as well… Animals are animals but Man – Can he become an animal again? Can he remain totally wild and be unaware about the consequences of his misdeeds? Can he be what he’s supposed to be… a human being… an emotional, intelligent and spiritual being?? It is said being born as a human is considered as a privilege and the ultimate level in the cycle of life… But, can the human rise above this level? If yes, to what extent… and to reach where…?

The man has discovered the ‘God particle’ and believes to find out the secrets of the universe and how it came into existence. The man might believe ‘God’ is simply imaginary.

If ‘we’ the civilized beings are superior enough to run this world and the universe, why is it so difficult to:

  • forgive that guy/girl who broke your heart
  • let go of the manipulations, fraud and evil
  • empathize with your neighbor’s loss
  • sort out the differences with your spouse

We claim to have conquered this world and the universe but we have not yet conquered self! We are still MANIMALS!

‘Been there, Done that’

Have you observed kittens? Have you observed cats? It doesn’t matter if you are an animal lover or not… it is just about observations! Okay… now you don’t need to lose your cool on this… Let me come straight to the agenda.

The point is I have observed kittens and cats; the fact is I am a cat lover. I like the animal and their demeanor. Mind you… when I say demeanor, it can as well be put in bold and in upper case. Let me tell you why.

Cats by nature are complicated creatures. They act as if they own this world and the people in it but still don’t give a damn about it. It is not as if they are detached from everything or are unaware about what’s happening around them; it is just that they know ‘everything’ and still wouldn’t care less about nothing.

Honestly, it wouldn’t be fair to them if I generalize and tell such stuff about them. That’s because each cat is unique and show different tendencies and behavior.

When it comes to kittens, they are the ones bursting with so much enthusiasm, playfulness and activity. They are into it till they finally have to sleep on it and once up, they are onto it again. Everything and everyone is subject to their scrutiny and curiosity. And, when a senior cat notices the frivolous things these kittens do, the clear indication the cat gives is that of, “Been there, done that!”

Let’s get to the questions:

  1. Why does the cat give ‘been there, done that’ impression? Can it not have a zestful life like a kitten? Is it that now the cat finds it as wasteful and uninteresting? Is there an age and time limit to do the kitten stuff?
  2. Now, let’s relate the topic to us… What are our limitations? If one is young at heart, does it mean he/she can do any frivolous activity disregarding the age? For instance, can a married guy do the same things that he did while he was a bachelor?

I am just asking… There must be a time, place and age for everything, is it not?

The flip-side of the Cat Theory:

When we were young, we might have missed on some things or we didn’t have certain things… so, now we want to go through that experience or enjoy those things? Why? Coz it is accessible but what about the age? Would it be appropriate? Maybe not… so, what we do? We try to impose or get it through our children…We make them want the things that we had wanted without caring much if the kids need it or not. “I have not been there… and have not done that… So, you do it… and let me help you do it…” This is the message most adults give to the younger generation.

But the cat… the cat doesn’t do that… the kittens have all the freedom and the cat observes without interfering much!!

Better to Break or Bend?

Read the following proverbs:

‘A living dog is better than a dead lion.’

‘Better a live beggar than a dead king.’

‘The wind does not break a tree that can bend.’

‘Better to die on your feet than to live on your knees.’

‘Be a free bird than a captive one waiting to be fed.’

‘If you are unbreakable, it doesn’t mean you have to bend.’

‘It is better to be killed than frightened to death.’

Some convey a similar meaning (better to bend) while some others are contradictory (better to break).

Now, is it better to bend to circumstances OR better to break without giving in to any kind of situations?

Sometimes, we are caught in such moments where we may have to bend than risk breaking up… Sometimes, we allow ourselves to break than bend… We face and go through these happenings knowingly or unknowingly. However, the big question is, do we know when it is worth it?

As a parent, by breaking a rule, are we getting closer to our kids or making them move away from us? On the other hand, by bending down to their wishes, are we succumbing to the pressures of raising our kids in the manner which hampers their positive growth?

As a spouse, are we breaking our relationship by boosting our ego and not bending during an argument? Contrarily, are we allowing our spouse to dictate his/her terms and conditions on us by bending too much that it can destroy the relationship?

As a professional, are we blindly following what is told to us without questioning what, why and how of things…? Are we letting our higher-ups dominate us to the extent that we lose our individuality?

As a citizen, is it better that we bend to the unfair rules and corrupt systems or is it better we break down trying to change the system?

‘It was the last straw that broke the camel’s back.’

There is a limit to how much you can bend… there is a limit to how much you can break… more you bend, more is your chance for breaking… so, you need to rise soon after the moment you bend! And, if you break once, then it should take you minimal time and effort to gather and lift yourself again.

Learn about yourself because if you don’t, nobody will and nobody has to. You are the key. Each of us has our own boiling and melting points. Just know when you have reached there.

‘In matters of principle, stand like a rock; in matters of taste, swim with the current’ – Thomas Jefferson

Don’t bend, Don’t break, Don’t back down… possible?

Rich, poor, middle

Here, I present my original collection of light humour based on the ‘society’ realities. I believe any humour has a sardonic touch of reality and facts in it.

Poor – make ends meet to manage a daily bread

Rich – throw parties to feed the other rich

Middle class – eat on the run!

Poor – wish for a television set

Rich – show-off their television screens

Middle class – don’t have time to watch TV!

Poor – look at a airplane amazed

Rich – live in amazing planes

Middle class – wait for the delayed plane!

Poor – have a humble holiday at home

Rich – have an exotic vacation abroad

Middle class – Thank God, there is a Sunday!

Poor – family comes first

Rich – I come first

Middle class – Boss comes first!

Poor – bear the adjustment

Rich – barely do the adjustment

Middle class – adjust!

Poor – save every penny

Rich – have Swiss accounts

Middle class – pay taxes and EMIs!

Poor – enjoy the sun and breeze

Rich – enjoy with the heater and cooler

Middle class – am I bothered about the temperature?!!

Poor – love don’t cost a thing

Rich – love every ‘thing’

Middle class – love is God, God help me!

Hope you liked it!

Is Grass greener on the other side? Could be!

In life, we often move along with certain notions and pre-determined mindsets. Let me test some of them here with a slight touch of logical humour –

  1. We know life isn’t a bed of roses and we also know roses have thorns but anyone thought how’s it for the thorns? It could easily be a bed of roses for them!
  2. If you can’t convince them confuse them. But, if you can’t confuse them shouldn’t you confirm it once and for all? Do it.
  3. Early bird gets the worm but worms couldn’t be sleeping or is it that they got up first? So, getting up early in the morning is a good habit but not if you are a worm!
  4. Only common people can say ‘common sense isn’t common’ and they know it better, no doubt! So, could I proclaim “‘Common Sense’ belongs to the extraordinary…”? I think I can!
  5. They say ‘forget the past… live in the present’ & they also say ‘learn from your mistakes’ but how will I know what mistakes I made if I have to forget the past? It’s apt to say let’s not forget our mistakes.
  6. ‘Never say never’ – this could be the most unintelligent phrase in English… after all, you just had to say it twice to convey the meaning! Besides, ‘never’ is a negative word even if used in positive context.
  7. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush but what’s wrong with having more than two especially when multitasking is the buzz word today? Just need to balance it right.
  8. Whoever said, ‘money can’t buy everything’ must have had lots of money or lots of everything! But it can also mean ‘everything isn’t for sale’ and ‘money is cheap’.
  9. ‘A rose by any other name would smell as sweet’ quoted William Shakespeare but interesting question is how do we know what we are referring to when we talk about the sweetness? And no way, names are just for namesake!
  10. Row, row, row your boat, gently down the stream. Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily, life is but a dream. This is a popular nursery rhyme and the idea is to ‘row our life boats quietly and happily while living the dream!’ The question is figuring out whether it is really a stream, river or an ocean where we are rowing our boats.

‘Life is a mystery’ so, don’t worry if you get lost. We all are…!

Keep going though in search of your path and when you are sure you have found your path, keep rowing more!

SPACE – 2

Continuing into Space-2…

(Do refer my previous blog on Space – http://know2be.wordpress.com/2011/06/23/space/‎)

Remember the time when you spent considerable time wondering whether your car would fit into the available parking SPACE…? At that point of time, the space was more important to you than your car, isn’t it? It should be… after all, car is supposed to carry you… you hardly can carry your car wherever you go!

Then what about that ‘to-let’ space a building owner advertises and which he/she would like someone to occupy? Isn’t the space that’s offered a valuable proposition then? And it only gets more value with the status of the location… is it in the city centre? Is it near the bus terminal? Is it the most happening location? So, the space you own fetches you revenues in such case.

Even human anatomy is such where the creator has given ample scope for space… observe yourself… isn’t there space between your eyes, ears, fingers, toes… don’t forget the space between your any two hair… Of course, in some persons, the space between their eyes could be more or less but important thing to note is ‘there is space’. Now, that’s just external body…! What about the bone structure, nerves, tissues, vital organs… are they all clamped up inside? No way, they are appropriately spaced… heart is in its own space while kidneys are located in its own significant space. In rare cases where ‘space’ application has somehow gone wrong, we have conjoint twins or a dislocation of certain body parts.

Just like how air occupies the space inside a balloon or water occupies the space of the container it’s poured in, haven’t we occupied earth’s space? We have constructed our bridges, flyovers, tunnels, subways and taken away the space or should I say, we have made ‘a space’ to suit our conveniences?

Whatever it is, I would like to conclude by saying, ‘Space is a wonderful entity’.  We think – we create space, we need space, we own space, we allot space, we invade space or we occupy space… the truth is we are living and moving in SPACE.

Thank you WordPress for this Space.
